Deferment
by Kayden Hoang Bui
I finally received approval for my loan deferment request from the claws of SallieMae! Lol. As a Fulbrighter, you get to request a loan deferment because you’ll be on a graduate fellowship (which also means you’ll be broke and will probably be eating sandwiches with one slice of bread and no filling), so SallieMae is benevolent enough to not hassle you for payments until it’s over. 😀
Hi Kayden,
How did you go about applying for deferment? I will be a fellow in Brazil during the 2017 academic year. I’ve located and completed the form on the FedLoan site but it requires a signature from an “authorized official” whatever that means. Any insight into how this should all play out would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

If you have federal loans, then I believe this is the form. I sent my form to Johnathan Akeley to sign, so it might be the same situation where you will send it to the person in charge of your region below. It’s been a couple years since I did it, but this is generally what I did. I also remember putting in a self-stamped envelope to whichever adddress is listed on the form to make it easier for the “authorized official” to send it on my behalf.
This is who I found for Brazil:
